Build your league
Match play leagues
Run a league where each team plays one other team every week — match scoring, low-vs-low pairing, drawing the season and validating cards.
How a match play league works
Pick a head-to-head Contest Format in the league wizard (see Create a league):
| Format | What a matchup is |
|---|---|
| Head to Head (Match Points) | Each golfer plays one golfer from the other team, one-on-one. |
| Head to Head + Team Total | The same one-on-one matches, plus points for the lower combined team score. |
Each week, a team plays one other team in its division. With divisions, teams only meet teams in their own division — so set up divisions before you draw the season.
Set up the match scoring
Create League Details Match Scoring
Choosing a head-to-head format adds a Match Scoring section to the wizard (and hides Standings and League Points, which these leagues don’t use).
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| How a match is won | Match play result — the point goes to whoever scores more match-play points (holes won) in the match; or Lower net total. A tie splits it. |
| How golfers are paired | Low handicap vs low handicap — each team’s lowest handicap plays the other team’s lowest, and so on up; a golfer with no handicap counts as 0. Or Roster order — in the order golfers joined their team. |
| Match points | A preset — 1 per match won + 1 for the team total, or 1 per hole won + 1 per match won + 2 for the team total — or Custom to set Points per hole won, Points for winning a match and Points for the team total yourself. A halved hole splits its point. |
| Forfeit award | What a matchup is worth to the team that turned up when the other team forfeits. A number you choose; 0 pays a forfeit nothing. |
The box underneath adds it up — for example “22 points are on offer in each matchup” for two golfers over 9 holes with points per hole. Until you pick them yourself, How a match is won and How golfers are paired follow the match points: the per-hole preset sets Match play result and Low handicap vs low handicap.
Strokes inside a match
Edit League Match Scoring
Edit League has the same settings, plus two more:
- Strokes inside a match — Full handicap (the default): each golfer plays off their own playing handicap. Difference between the two golfers: only the higher handicap gets strokes — the difference between the two — on the hardest holes first. This applies only to the one-on-one match; the leaderboard and the team total always use full handicaps.
- What the team total compares — Net scores or Gross scores (Team Total format only).
Put match opponents on one bay
On a league where each team picks a recurring time, tick Put match opponents on one bay (in the wizard, or Edit League → Team Settings) so two teams drawn against each other at the same night and start time play on one bay. Left off, each team plays on its own bay. A change takes effect at the next draw.
Draw the season’s matchups
League Actions Generate Matchups (Match Play Only)
- Finish your teams and divisions first.
- Click League Actions → Generate Matchups (Match Play Only). Every week is drawn at once, and each team meets a different team in its division each week. A division with an odd number of teams gives one team a bye each week.
- A big league takes a minute. The league shows Schedule updating in background and a progress bar on the Schedule tab; schedule changes wait until it finishes.
- Check the weeks on the Schedule tab. To change one week’s pairings, open Edit session → Matchups.
Only Admin accounts see Generate Matchups.
Re-pair golfers by handicap
Schedule pick a week ⋮ Re-pair golfers by handicap
If golfers were paired before anyone had a handicap — or handicaps have moved — re-pair a week without redrawing it. It’s offered on low-vs-low leagues, on weeks already drawn and not finalized.
- Open the week’s ⋮ menu and choose Re-pair golfers by handicap.
- Read the preview: how many matches will change, and which matchups will be left as they are (for example, because they already have scores).
- Click Re-pair golfers. Opponent teams, bays, times and bookings don’t change.
Check and validate the week’s cards
Golfers enter their scores in the Fareway app — or anyone in the matchup can, depending on Edit League → Score Entry. Each match has its own Match Results scorecard, and the week’s ⋮ menu has Validate all scorecards and Close all matches. Skins on these weeks settle only once every card is validated. See Head-to-head and match-play scorecards.
A match counts toward the standings as soon as the scores settle it and both teams’ cards are submitted — you don’t wait for the rest of the week. If a handicap change re-scores a played week, the standings update too.
Record a forfeit or a match stopped early
Schedule pick a week the matchup Record outcome
When a team doesn’t turn up, or the clock runs out before a match is finished, record it on the matchup itself.
A forfeit
- Open the Schedule tab, pick the week, and switch View to Match play. Find the matchup.
- Click Record outcome → Record forfeit….
- Under Which team did not turn up?, pick the team. Add a Reason (optional) if you like.
- Click Record forfeit. A message says Forfeit recorded, naming who forfeited and what the other team was awarded.
The team that turned up gets the league’s Forfeit award in place of the match results (set it under Match Scoring — see above). If the award is 0, the Hub records the forfeit but warns that nobody got any points.
A match stopped early
- On the same matchup, click Record outcome → Stopped early….
- Type Holes everyone finished — counted from the first hole of the round, so on a back nine, 6 means six holes played.
- Click Record stop. Every hole after the last one both sides finished is halved — no scores are made up.
The week then shows the matchup as Forfeit · team awarded N or Stopped after N holes, and the standings update straight away.
Questions people ask
Golfers were paired before they had handicaps. How do I fix it?
On a low-vs-low league, open the week's ⋮ menu on the Schedule tab and choose Re-pair golfers by handicap. It re-pairs on that week's handicaps without changing opponents, bays or times, and leaves any matchup that already has scores alone.
I changed the match points and old weeks changed. Why?
Every week is scored from the league's match settings each time a leaderboard is read, so changing one re-scores weeks already played, including finished ones. Settle the settings before week 1.
How do I record a forfeit?
On the Schedule tab, open the week, find the matchup and choose Record outcome → Record forfeit…. Pick the team that didn't turn up; the other team gets the league's Forfeit award. Undo forfeit puts the matchup back to normal scoring.
